Riyadh, October 21, 2020: The 2020 Global AI Summit organized by the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA) and held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defense, concluded its first day under the theme “AI for the Good of Humanity” and is set to return tomorrow, on October 22.

The Global AI Summit was inaugurated with an impactful speech by His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince, delivered by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Sharaf Alghamdi, President of SDAIA. The speech emphasized the importance of embracing artificial intelligence and harnessing its capabilities to unleash its potential for the good of humanity. HE Dr. Alghamdi highlighted the pioneering role of the Kingdom in reducing the digital gap existing between developed and developing countries, especially after the challenges that the world has gone through this year.

HE Dr. Alghamdi also expressed his satisfaction with the summit, which is one of the largest artificial intelligence events worldwide. The world is going through exceptional times, where technology in general, and artificial intelligence, in particular, are playing a fundamental role in shaping the new world and in accelerating sustainable development. HE Dr. Alghamdi stressed that the Kingdom sees an opportunity for a novel and positive perspective that prioritizes cooperation and participation over competition. He also discussed the potential benefits of AI through reliable and responsible use. And this is what the summit aims to do by bringing together decision-makers, experts, specialists, and academics in government and private sectors from around the world.

The first day of the Global AI Summit, therefore, witnessed the launch of the National Strategy for Data and AI, along with the round table meeting of the United Nations’ Advisory Body for Artificial Intelligence

In addition, SDAIA signed an agreement with the World Bank to establish a strategic partnership related to the Kingdom’s efforts to strengthen the local economy in developing countries and enable them to accelerate the development of AI technology to be used as an engine for economic growth.

Furthermore, SDAIA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Telecommunication Union as part of its efforts to support countries' readiness and international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence and to create an internationally recognized system that mobilizes resources and provides support for official bodies to adopt artificial intelligence to meet their economic requirements.

The Global AI Summit also includes ministerial sessions and various workshops on four main themes: these themes are: “Shaping The New Normal”, “AI & Leadership”, “AI Cooperation” and “The future of AI”. The Global AI Summit coincides with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's presidency of the G20 meetings. The summit is considered one of the most important events on the agenda of both the Saudi Arabian and the global digital economy.

The event aims to construct dialogues of global importance, whether in terms of recovering from the pandemic or the trends that shape the field of artificial intelligence. These dialogues will help develop strategies necessary to establish an effective and influential system for artificial intelligence, encourage cooperation between leaders in this field, and explore national strategic options.

The Global AI Summit comes in line with the Kingdom's endeavor to achieve its aspirations for global leadership through a data-based economy and artificial intelligence. It also highlights the role played by SDAIA in the strategic leadership of the alternative economy in cooperation with many relevant parties to achieve the goals of Vision 2030.
